Biotrend produces electricity and heat together from biogas, landfill gas and waste-derived fuel in its Biomass Power Plants.

In Biotrend's biomass facilities, agricultural and forestry residues are procured, stored and converted into the most efficient electrical energy by using them in ideal recipes. In 2024, Biotrend operated its biomass power plants with a capacity utilization rate of more than 85%.

1-       Electricity Production from Biogas

Biogas production begins when organic waste is separated by processing municipal waste in Biotrend's mechanical separation and material recovery facilities and transferred to anaerobic fermentation units via conveyors. Biogas production is completed by mixing organic waste horizontally in a thermophilic environment over a period of approximately 28 days.

At the end of the process, the produced biogas is stored in the biogas balloon. Biogas is directed to the gas conditioning unit before energy production and is cleaned of moisture, hydrogen sulfide and solid particles. Electricity and heat are produced from biogas in gas engines. While the produced bioelectricity is provided to the grid, bioheat is evaluated in the biogas production process of anaerobic fermentation units, thus ensuring energy efficiency in the facility.

2-       Electricity Production from Landfill Gas

After municipal waste is accepted to the site within the scope of regular storage activities, methane-rich landfill gas is formed over time through the anaerobic fermentation process. In order to provide environmental and economic benefits by using landfill gas, which contains harmful greenhouse gases for environmental pollution and climate change, in energy production, landfill gas is collected effectively and efficiently in the regular storage area and used in energy production after the gas conditioning process.
