Carbon Credits are traded through mechanisms known as the global carbon market. A Carbon Credit is an “emission reduction unit used to indicate a greenhouse gas emission reduction of 1 ton of C02 equivalent” and is a tradable permit or certificate that entitles the holder to emit 1 ton of C02 or equivalent greenhouse gas. Carbon Credit mechanisms aim to support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create environmental and social benefits. Biotrend started carbon credit projects in 2021 with Harmandalı, Balıkesir and Uşak projects, where the positive environmental impact of waste management and waste-to-energy generation activities are documented by audits conducted by third-party independent institutions, and progressed to cover all its facilities in 2022. Accordingly, Biotrend carried out greenhouse gas reduction certification projects covering 16 facilities within the scope of VERRA, GCC and ICR certification programs.Biotrend has entered into a consultancy agreement dated October 7, 2022 regarding the provision of consultancy services from Mundo Verde Climate SA for carbon asset certification processes under VERRA and ICR standards and the sale of carbon assets whose certification processes have been completed through Mundo Verde Climate SA. Within the scope of the contract with Mundo Verde Climate SA, Biotrend sold carbon credits in voluntary markets and generated a total revenue of USD 7.3 million from 2022 until the end of 2023. According to Mundo Verde Climate SA's assessment, Biotrend prevented the emission of approximately 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2022 and 2023. Biotrend has the potential to generate carbon credits in the range of approximately 2-3 million tons per year for the coming years.
